I Wanted to Tell You...

(A Friendship in Pictures)

June 25, 2014

by Rachel Ford

Leaf: This is Tarak Ji, his family has made instruments for generations. I went to him today for a few tanpura repairs. (Varanasi, India)

Rae: There were such lovely things at the weekend flea market. I didn't buy anything. One day. (Chiang Mai, Thailand)

Leaf: I was sitting in a cycle rickshaw on the way to the tailor. The weather is so hot now that around 5pm everyone goes out to run all their errands at the bazaar, so that means lots of traffic! (Varanasi, India)

Rae: It's always funny to find a throwback to my childhood in a second hand market in Thailand. Tim Horton's is a donut shop from Canada, and what I remember most about them is how their donuts smelled at 3:00 in the morning when I drove by while working the graveyard shift. Or smoking (inside!) as a highschooler, drinking coffee and eating cruellers with my friends. All these memories from one t-shirt in a hot outdoor market. (Chiang Mai, Thailand)

Leaf: One of the items for for sale at our 'Courtyard Bazaar' today was this wild wig with horns which this Little Cutie wore around all afternoon. (Varanasi, India)

Rae: I was rather entranced by my tuk tuk driver's fashion sense--the teal blue paisley shirt under the shirt he has on top, as well as his gorgeous hair which he has allowed to go gray (not common here.) (Chiang Mai, Thailand)

Leaf: Did you know that it is an Indian who proudly holds first place in the Guinness Book of Records for the hairiest ears in the world? Hairy ears are to die for! We love hairy ears! (Varanasi, India)

Rae: My friend Esther and I zoom our way to book group, crossing bridges and driving through Chiang Mai traffic. Esther can get through any traffic block and be first through the light when it turns green. (Chiang Mai, Thailand)

Leaf: A beautiful artist couple Janis and Chuck Lindley, painted these fish on rocks they found around the property. Aren't they beautiful? (Varanasi, India)

Rae: I'm a bit messy when I paint. (Pai, Thailand)

Leaf: This is a little chai shop which I sat at while I drank a coconut at the market. It had Bollywood music coming out of it somehow; you'll have to imagine that part, as well as the smell of the incense and the sound of horns and hundreds of people in the background. Every photo I take has a million sounds and smells in it. India awakens and bombards every sense! (Varanasi, India)

Rae: Leafy does the dishes. (Pai, Thailand)
