I Wanted to Tell You...

(A Friendship in Pictures)

June 4, 2014

Leaf: I love that wearing sunglasses is part of the 'starting up the tandoor in the morning' routine for this 'Uncle Ji'. (Varanasi, India)

Rae: You win this blog, Leaf. I love that photo so much that I don't even know what to put with it, so look! Flowers! (Pai, Thailand)

Leaf: This mural was painted by my sister Anke Klevjer on a wall of the River Ashram building. The art was inspired by Henri Nouwen's book 'Life of the Beloved', which is a book that we both love. Anke says about the mural, "It is about God meeting us in our brokenness, and us coming to Him in our deepest wound, and finding that it is in that place that we find him most profoundly." (Varanasi, India)

Rae: I thought these water lilies were dead, but it turns out they were just dormant and they're blooming now in all their glory. (Pai, Thailand)

Leaf: This is my favourite chai shop in Varanasi. The 'special chai' is the best! (Varanasi, India)

Rae: One thing I love about Thailand is that there is always room in the day for little bites to eat. (Pai, Thailand)

Leaf: We had some rain last night. It's been so hot lately but this morning was so nice and cool that I went for a long walk to begin the day. It is like the whole city is laughing again, everything is easy when the weather is nice. (Varanasi, India)

Rae: The mountains have been beautiful lately, now that the green grasses are back and the clouds play overhead. (Pai, Thailand)

Leaf: If you stay in here for the hot season, your reward is DELICIOUS MANGOES. (Varanasi, India)

Rae: This lady was collecting greens from the hillside for dinner. After I took her photo, she let me know that she doesn't have a husband yet, but she would like one. A foreign husband, preferably, and did I know anyone? (Pai, Thailand)

Leaf: Flowers are cheap and in abundance in my city…which I adore! This is the local flower market. (Varanasi, India)

Rae: I love to go to the waterfall to watch the local kids in their fearlessness on the rock slides. They slide down nearly vertical slides on their feet, or backwards, or they jump! Bravery always inspires me. (Mhor Paeng, Thailand)

Leaf: We woke up to discover that Bollywood had come to our garden! There were more than 100 people including an on site tailor and a portable kitchen set up for cooking food. Taran became the real celebrity of the day as he cruised around impressing everyone with his Hindi, this won certain privileges for him and his friends like; free snacks and chai, photos with the 'villain', meeting the 'hero' and the chance to hold a real pistol! (Varanasi, India)

Rae: Water running over stones is so beautiful. (Pai, Thailand)
